Profile in Courage Award

President John F. Kennedy respected and admired acts of political courage. His book, Profiles in Courage, published in 1956, recounts the stories of eight U.S. Senators who risked their careers by taking principled stands for unpopular positions. The Profile in Courage Award, presented each May by the Kennedy Library Foundation, honors elected officials who have demonstrated exceptional political courage.

The Profile in Courage Essay Contest invites United States high school students to consider the concept of political courage by writing an essay on a U.S. elected official who has chosen to do what is right, rather than what is expedient. A “Profile in Courage” essay is a carefully researched recounting of a story: the story of how an elected official risked his or her career to take a stand based on the dictates of conscience, rather than the dictates of polls, interest groups or even constituents. The contest challenges high school students to discover new profiles in courage, and to therefore research and write about acts of political courage that occurred after the publication of Kennedy's Profiles in Courage in 1956.

Teton Science Schools' Young Women and Science Field Research Program

Ninth grade girls are encouraged to apply for this unique opportunity at the Kelly Campus of the Teton Science Schools. This residential program looks to ground young women in the study of various sciences, including a close look at the ecology of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Students will also be exposed to outdoor and naturalist skills, such as how to use map keys and field guides, make careful observations, and keep a field journal. SERIOUS ART, SERIOUS FUN!

Based on the Oxbow semester model, these sessions focus on creating project-based art in a wide variety of media. Taught by professional artists and teachers, the first week campers explore the fundamentals in drawing, painting, sculpture, fabrication and photography, to find and develop their own particular interests and creativity.

They are also exposed to a wide variety of artistic styles and different artist's work. They engage in discussions on why artists create and where they get their inspiration from. At that point, they are well prepared to propose a "final project" in the medium of their choice around a topic that has personal relavance to them. The remainer of the session is devoted to working in the studio to bring that piece being. Along the way they learn the steps of the artistic process from idea to creation, peer feedback, reflection and writing about their process, hanging/presenting the piece and having it viewed by the public.

Each summer, over 400 high school students from across the country and around the world immerse themselves in art, design, architecture, creative writing, and Critical & Visual Studies in Pratt’ s intensive four-week college-level program. Pratt uniquely combines academic excellence with hands-on studio work.
The highly structured Pre-College curriculum is modeled after Pratt’s B.F.A. program. The curriculum is comprised of four courses and activities. Students have an elective (2 credits), a foundation (2 credits), an art history appreciation course, a portfolio development course, a lecture series, and a cultural insights track. Students pick one of the following electives: Architecture, Art & Design Discovery (Brooklyn only), Art History, Creative Writing, Critical & Visual Studies, Fashion Design (Brooklyn only), Fine Arts/Painting & Drawing, Graphic Design, Illustration (Digital) (Brooklyn only), Illustration (traditional), Industrial Design (Brooklyn only), Interior Design (Brooklyn only), Interactive Arts (Brooklyn only), Jewelry/Metal Arts (Brooklyn only), Media Arts/ Video, Photography, Sequential Art & the Comic Book (Brooklyn only) and Sculpture.

The cultural insights track comprises weekend social and cultural activities including plays, museums, gallery and studio visits, films, etc. All parts of the curriculum are mandatory for Brooklyn resident students. The faculty includes architects, artists and designers recognized in their fields. Guest lecturers and critics may also participate in the program. Students earn 4 college credits upon completion of the program.

Yellowstone Wildlife Ecology Program

This program is an amazing opportunity to work with

the US Forest Service in the wilderness in and around

Yellowstone National Park.

Yellowstone is the oldest National Park in the United

States and home to some of the country’s most fascinating

wildlife and geological features. The greater Yellowstone

ecosystem provides the ideal setting to get immersed in

wildlife, mountains, rivers, and forests all in an effort to

better understand the varying conservation issues facing

the region.

We’ll start the week doing conservation research and service

work with the US Forest Service in the wilderness just north

of Yellowstone focusing on different wildlife population

surveys and monitoring projects. Next, we spend three

days exploring the amazing wildlife and landscapes of

Yellowstone, looking for wolves, bears, bison, elk, bighorn,

sheep and more. We take a celebratory rafting trip on the

Yellowstone River on the final day of this adventure!

The 9-day course includes over 30 hours coursework

and instruction including conservation biology, wildlands

management, and the scientific method. Participants

complete over 20 hours of field research and using develop

and present a field-based research project using the data

they collect.

On the course, visiting students will join their peers from the

area. Share your research experience and enjoy getting to

Summer Internship with Friends of the Teton River

Friends of the Teton River (FTR) is offering a local high school student the opportunity to learn while earning money on Teton Valley’s waterways this summer. For the fifth consecutive year, FTR is offering a summer internship to a high school student from the Teton Valley who is interested in science and field work with experts in hydrology, fisheries and restoration.
“I learned more this summer than I have in any in any of my other previous jobs.” said James Durrett, the 2008 recipient of the summer internship.
The intern will work side-by-side with FTR staff on a variety of projects including water quality testing, stream bank restoration projects and community education and outreach.
“There is no better way for young people to build relationships, job experience and a connection to place than to work hands-on in the field” stated Amy Verbeten, FTR Education and Outreach Director. “It’s a summer experience they will never forget.”
The 10-week internship will run from early June through mid-August, and requires a commitment of 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. The student will earn a $3,000 stipend. Applicants must reside full time in the Teton Valley, and must be a junior or senior in high school during the 2009-10 school year. Karen Scheid, FTR Board Member Emeritus, donates funding for the scholarship. Interested students can pick up an application in the Friends of the Teton River office, located in Suite 310 of the Colter Building, or talk to their high school science teacher. National Museum of Wildlife Art Seeks High School Student to Participate in Arctic Leadership Camp

The National Museum of Wildlife Art is currently accepting applications from Teton County high school sophomores to participate in Polar Bears International’s (PBI) “Adventure Learning Leadership Camp” in Churchill, Manitoba, Canada. The camp will be held September 26 through October 3, 2009. Valerie and Richard Beck are making it possible for a Jackson student to attend at no cost to the student thanks to their generous sponsorship. The Becks are Museum supporters and PBI board members who live in Jackson Hole. This is the second year they have sponsored a Teton County student.

Applicants must be 16 years old by September 26, 2009 and must be a high school junior attending school in Teton County by fall 2009. The selected student will join more than a dozen top students from several countries on this remarkable adventure to the Far North. Students travel to Churchill for the annual fall polar bear migration. There, they explore a range of issues relating to polar bears, humans, and the environment. Camp participants learn from some of the foremost scientists, educators, and resources on polar bears and arctic habitat. High-speed data links allow them to report to their home communities from the tundra. The goal is to equip participants with the tools they need to share their knowledge and to motivate them to make a difference regarding environmental challenges.

“Every year, we select a group of bright, motivated students who are eager to learn about the bears,” says Robert Buchanan, PBI's President. “While there, they communicate with their peers through online journals. After they return, they share what they've learned through talks, slide presentations, and media interviews.” Each student also develops and manages a project within their community to support the mission of Polar Bears International.
Dick Beck, PBI board member, and Jackson Hole resident, has seen first-hand the fruits of the Leadership Camp program. “Camp is both fun and challenging. And feedback from its graduates indicate that it is rewarding and eye-opening. It gives them an opportunity to learn about polar bears and the arctic and understand the importance of bringing people together to discuss and develop solutions rather than becoming mired in polarized viewpoints. They hear from tree-huggers and fur trappers. They meet and learn from the First Nation people of Canada.”

“PBI’s goal is to empower these already gifted students to become highly effective at inspiring, informing, and enlisting others in creating positive change. These kids will help other kids assume responsibility for their futures.”

Museum President & CEO James C. McNutt, Ph.D., says “The Arctic Ambassador program is an excellent way for students to be involved and gain direct experience with wildlife, and also with communication about wildlife—always an artistic endeavor.” As a nominating institution, the Museum will provide the student ambassador with access to resources and support for outreach efforts when he or she returns to Jackson Hole following Camp.

Interested students should contact the Museum for an application. The completed application, a teacher recommendation, and a copy of the student’s high school transcript must be submitted to the Museum by April 30, 2009. Top candidates will be interviewed at the Museum in May. The selection will be announced June 1, 2009. Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Teton Area

Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Teton Area is now accepting applications for our Summer Associate positions from those interested helping Habitat build simple, decent, affordable homes for low-income families. These 8 positions are funded by AmeriCorps*VISTA, a government service program akin to PeaceCorps. The 8 week service term begins on May 24, 2009 and ends on July 18, 2009. Summer Associates will receive a living allowance of $909 per month, as well as a $1000 AmeriCorps Education Award at the end of their service term. Habitat is accepting applications from local and non-local residents. Interested persons do not need to currently be an AmeriCorps*VISTA member to apply, though if selected for a position, they must complete the online AmeriCorps application. Applicants must have a high school diploma, at minimum.

Habitat has two kinds of positions available, ReStore Associates and Construction Site Associates. Associates will work 5 days a week, Tuesdays through Saturdays, during their service term.

ReStore Associates will work in our ReStore, where we sell donated used and new building materials and household items. ReStore Associates will assist with customer service and retail tasks, help to manage the store, and learn about the mission and goals of Habitat for Humanity. Associates will learn about the role of the ReStore in supporting Habitat's projects as well as the benefits the store brings to the community and the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling to the environment. Other areas and projects may include interior design, furniture/cabinet building (finish carpentry), recycled art projects, deconstructions, and remodels.

Construction Site Associates will work alongside volunteers and other AmeriCorps members on our construction site in Wilson, helping build a home for a family in need. Associates will learn necessary construction skills, and will be able to lead a small group of volunteers on site by the later part of their term. They will also learn about the mission and goals of Habitat for Humanity, and about its impact on the local community.

Jackson Hole Music Experience's Summer Rock Camp

The Mahindra United World College of India (MUWCI) offers participants from around the world an opportunity to come together, work, learn, and experience India through one of the defining features of the College: The Community Interaction Program (CIP)
. This program builds relationships with our surrounding communities based on equity and the mutual sharing of experiences, knowledge, and energy.

This unique experience will be offered between June 28, 2009 and July 18, 2009. During their stay here, participants will have the chance to volunteer and work with various Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) which work in rural grassroots

Prudential Spirit Community Awards

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards honor young people in middle level and high school grades for outstanding volunteer service to their communities. Created in 1995 by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the awards constitute the United States' largest youth recognition program based solely on volunteering. Over the past 13 years, the program has honored more than 80,000 young volunteers at the local, state, and national level.

Local Honorees receive a Certificate of Achievement from their schools or organizations. Those who qualify (50 hours of service for age 14 and younger, 100 hours for those older) also receive the President's Volunteer Service Award.
State Honorees receive an award of $1,000, an engraved silver medallion, and an all-expenses-paid trip with a parent or guardian to Washington, D.C., for national recognition events.
National Honorees receive an additional award of $5,000, an engraved gold medallion, a crystal trophy for their schools or organizations, and a $5,000 grant from The Prudential Foundation for a nonprofit, charitable organization of their choice (see bulletin board for more details).
